The Trouble with Tribbles (er, I mean with Amish Friendship Bread)!

Drowning in bags of starter........

Perhaps we should have invested in the Ziplock company......

Earlier I wrote a post about Amish Friendship Bread.  It's been a couple of months now that I've mothered my little starter bag.  I've mushed and coddled it;  I've shared it;  I've forced it on unsuspecting friends;  I've tried to keep up with the demands of its 10-day cycle.  Enough.

I have a love-hate relationship with my Amish Friendship Bread.  It's fun to make with the kids, and it tastes delicious, but it can get a little out of control.  You begin with a starter, but every 10 days it can be divided into 4 parts, which you can distribute to your friends so they can also make the bread.  However, if you keep all of the starters for yourself, you soon discover the wonders of exponential growth.  Let's count:

After 10 days,  you have 4 bags of starter.
After 20 days, you have 4 x 4  = 16 bags.
After one month,  you have 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 bags!

But it gets worse.  After two months, you would have 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 4096 bags.  And after one year of dividing the starters, you would have (ask your kids to calculate this!)  more than 4 billion trillions bags of starter.  That's a lot of bread.  It reminded all of us of this:

  1. Yes, we got caught in the cycle one time when we were newly married. There's only so much Amish Friendship Bread one can make and/or give away!

  2. With the start of school, I needed a break too. So I froze the starter!
